Red flecks scattered across deep green jasper. The red is iron oxide—iron from within the earth, oxidised and absorbed into the stone.

Medieval Europe called it the "martyr's stone." Legend held that blood falling from the cross during the crucifixion stained the jasper beneath. Churches used it to adorn chalices and crosses.

The Romans, however, carved it into seals. The contrast of red and green produced a sharp impression—a practical choice. Legend and function. The same stone, chosen across centuries for entirely different reasons.

Across cultures, a stone with "tiger's eye" in its name has been consistently linked with the power to see through. People have always tried to read something in an animal's gaze. That impulse gave one mineral this name.

From the Greek "onyx," meaning "nail." In myth, Cupid trimmed Aphrodite's nails, and the clippings turned to stone.

A variety of chalcedony. Most commonly seen as solid black, though true onyx carries black and white banding. Since Roman times, that banding has been carved in relief to produce cameos—the natural contrast between layers used directly as light and shadow. The structure of the stone became the medium of expression.

Found in Brazil, India, and Uruguay. One of very few stones used without interruption from antiquity to the present.

Named in 1881 in honour of the French palaeontologist Eugène Dumortier. An aluminium borosilicate mineral, formed under high-temperature, low-pressure metamorphic conditions.

Found in Brazil, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, and near Lyon in France. Long used as a raw material for ceramics—its resistance to heat made it well suited to firing.

Its history as a gemstone is brief, but its history as an industrial material is not. Before it was considered beautiful, it was considered useful. Its relationship with people began through function, not ornament.
