Norse Runes: Origins, Meanings & Ancient Wisdom
The word 'rune' comes from Old Germanic, meaning 'secret' or 'hidden wisdom'. The Norse runic system dates to the second century AD, with some of the earliest inscriptions dated to around AD 160. The earliest system is known as the Elder Futhark. Its name comes from the sounds of its first six runes: F (fe), U (ur), Þ (thurisaz), A (ansuz), R (raido) and K (kaunan), a distinctive way of naming the alphabet.

Runes & Norse Mythology: The Passing of Sacred Wisdom
In Norse mythology, runes are closely associated with Odin, king of the gods. Seeking their wisdom, he is said to have hung from the world tree Yggdrasil for nine days and nights, offering himself without food or water until he understood the runes. The story places sacrifice at the heart of wisdom and reflects the sacred status of runes in Norse culture.
W.G. Collingwood (1854 - 1932) Odin's Sacrifice
Another account links the runes to Odin's sacrifice of one eye in exchange for wisdom, describing them as his reward.
Archaeological Evidence
Notable early finds include the Kylver Stone, dated to around AD 400, and the second-century Vimose Comb. The Kylver Stone carries a complete Elder Futhark sequence and is important evidence for the early alphabet. The Tängelgårda stones, dated to around AD 400, illustrate the use of runes in commemorative inscriptions.

The Evolution of Runes & Their Symbolic Blessings
Norse runes changed over time. The original Elder Futhark contained 24 characters and was used across what is now Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Germany. By the Viking Age, around AD 800–1100, the simplified Younger Futhark had 16 characters, reflecting changes in Norse languages.
Runologe, The 16 Runes of the Younger Futhark
The system is divided into three groups of eight runes, an arrangement associated with the symbolic importance of three and eight in Norse mythology, where both numbers are understood to carry special magical significance.
Each group is associated with an important Norse deity:
- Freyr: runes of harvest and peace
- Heimdallr: runes of protection and connection
- Tyr: runes of war and justice
Using & Interpreting Runes
In ancient Norse society, rune masters were regarded as important figures. They interpreted runes, offered blessings and advised on decisions affecting the community. Archaeological finds show runes on stones, talismans and tools, with practical, ritual and magical associations.
Women as well as men were respected as rune masters, contributing their knowledge and abilities to the life of the community.
Rune readings draw on intuition as well as inherited knowledge. They often consider the past, present and future, echoing the three Norns who weave the threads of fate in Norse mythology.

In a reading, it may be interpreted as a test of physical resilience, or a time when the consequences of past habits become apparent.
Uruz represents courage, creativity and endurance. Endings make room for new beginnings and renewed energy. Change can involve loss or sacrifice, yet it also asks us to prepare for future opportunities and approach life with strength and imagination.
