PLEOCHROIC TWILIGHT

MONTH

DECEMBER BIRTHSTONE

TRACE & NARRATIVE / 痕跡與敘事

Discovered in 1967 on the Merelani Hills in northern Tanzania. Its mineral name is zoisite, but Tiffany & Co. named it "tanzanite" and launched it to market. Kunzite, morganite—Tiffany has named others before.

Found at this single location and nowhere else. At the foot of Kilimanjaro, within a stretch of just a few kilometres. Geologists estimate the deposit may be exhausted within a generation.

It is pleochroic—shifting between blue, violet, and reddish-brown depending on angle. Three colours in one stone. And that stone exists at only one point on Earth.

PSYCHOLOGICAL PROJECTION / 心理投射

Insight — Perspective — Empathy

Shifts between blue and violet depending on the light — genuinely pleochroic. It trains the capacity to see a single situation from multiple positions. What changes isn't the fact. It's the vantage.

SELECTOR'S NOTE / 選品手記

He has the habit of viewing the same fact from three positions before forming an opinion. Same event, different seat, different meaning each time — a practice learnt through work, not theory. I find it fitting that a stone sourced from a single location on earth shows multiple colours depending on the angle. One origin, several readings. The parallel was reason enough to select it.
